Match report Epping lost out in a nail-biting finish at Old Brentwoods on Saturday. The visitors won the toss and elected to take first use of a beautiful batting track, but were soon struggling on 5-2 with openers Offord and Lycett back in the hutch. Simon Oliver and Jamie Brown took to the task of rebuilding with a patient partnership of 120, before Oliver departed for a useful 40. Further quick wickets fell though, and when Brown became the third victim of OB's spinner Miller, for a brilliant 87, we looked to be in danger of posting only a moderate total. But a handy eighth wicket partnership of 67 between Dipesh Bidiwala (57) and Graham Preston lifted us to a competitive 229-8.

The Old Brentwoods reply began in quickfire fashion and at 117-1, with plenty of overs in the bag, they seemed to be coasting to victory. A flurry of wickets from Lycett and Bidiwala, aided by some good catches, brought the game back into the balance. Stand-in skipper Oliver took three further wickets until finally the OBs were nine down with five runs still required from the last couple of overs. Number 11 Kallmann survived a loud caught behind appeal against Bidiwala and the home side eventually scrambled to victory with seven balls to spare. Captain Alistair Johnson batted throughout the innings for an unbeaten 93 to leave Epping agonisingly short of a first win this season.
