Epping Cricket Club Saturday Third XI v Wansted 4th XI on Sat 23 Jun 2007 at 1pm
Epping Cricket Club Lost by 10 Wickets

Match report Epping took on newly promoted Wansted 4th XI at Coopersale this week and with a combination of bad batting, damp pitch and a decent opposition bowling attack Epping were thoroughly beaten by 10 wickets.

The toss was won by Wansted who had no hesitation in putting us in to bat. The two Johns, Sanger and Brades opened the batting for Epping and immediately found that the damp pitch was causing problems with the bounce of the ball, with one of the Wasted opening bowlers taking chunks out of the wicket each time the ball pitched!! Sanger did not survive long playing his shot too early and getting a leading edge to gully. Unfortunately this started a procession of wickets tumbling at regular intervals. Jaques, batting at number 3, was undone by a ball, according to the umpire, moved a mile and was a very good delivery. Beavers chipped the ball delicately to square-leg and then Brades lost patients and was caught. Ned Piller showed brief quality with some sensible shots but unfortunately could not keep it going. Fleming was the only other batsman to trouble the scorers with a couple of lusty blows but once he had got carried away and offered an easy catch Epping were only capable of posting a total of 62. Vickers was the pick of the Wasted bowling taking 5 wickets but all their bowlers showed what the pitch could do if you put it in the right place.

As the innings was a short one the players turned straight round and Wansted began their ‘assault’ on the Epping total. ‘Assault’ is the appropriate word as it took the wasted opening pair only 7 overs to knock the runs off with Gayle finishing on 44 not out having carved Fleming to the midwicket boundary with ease. Jaques did show some good pace and had the batsmen in trouble but with such a small total on the board the result was never in doubt.

Epping failed to pick up any point from a disastrous game and with relegation an option now in the 3rd division will be required to find some winning ways to push tem up the table away from the drop zone.

The only good thing to come out of today was that, due to the game being over before 4pm, all the players were able to have as much tea as they liked.
