Epping Cricket Club Lost 58 Runs
Match report
Epping lost their final pre-season friendly in the final over against Premier Division Loughton on Saturday. Opting to bat, the home side were quickly into their stride and soon had the scoreboard ticking over at five an over. New man Graham Hancock (1-21) was the pick of the bowlers and he it was who made the breakthrough, snaring danger man Nick Carlier for just 14. Epping briefly stemmed the flow during the middle of the innings, with Jon Everett and Dave Bickley turning in useful efforts, but there was ultimately no respite from the powerful strokeplay of opener Gareth James who rattled up a classy 117 before retiring. Tim Adams and Dan Taylor grabbed a wicket apiece but Epping could do nothing to prevent Loughton comfortably advancing to a declaration total of 249-5 from only 45 overs.
The Epping response began dismally with the first seven batsmen all departing for single figure scores. Incredibly all seven were clean bowled as the visitors failed to get to grips with the Loughton attack. Humiliation beckoned as we slumped to 41-7 after only sixteen overs, but a gritty partnership of 140 between Graham Hancock and Simon Oliver prevented total calamity. Combining steadfast defence with powerful hitting, Hancock advanced to a terrific 92 before unluckily succumbing to a deftly taken legside catch by the home wicket-keeper. Oliver fell for a patient 35 in the penultimate over leaving Tim Adams and Jon Everett to negotiate eight balls to earn a creditable draw. Unfortunately last man Everett was undone by star bowler Ross Craig (5-21) in the last over and we fell to a 58 run defeat.
