Match report
Essex League Division 2
Leigh-on-sea 201-7 dec Epping 9-0 Match Abandoned
THE WEATHER was the winner at a sodden Lower Bury Lane as a torrential downpour ruined chances of a positive result.
Epping's bowlers had toiled well to restrict Leigh's batsmen to 201-7 on a good batting track.
But Epping's reply did not start till 5.30pm after a rain delay and after smiting 9 in just over an over the heavens opened to leave the square looking like a boating lake.
Both sides were frustrated by the tame ending as Epping needed to win to haul themselves out of the relegation zone as other games escaped the weather.
Earlier in the day Leigh's batsmen had started confidently, with openers Dave Liston (24) and Dave Clarke (34) getting on top of some loose bowling.
But when Tim Adams had Aussie Liston well caught at deep mid off by Matt Barrett and Dave Bickley bowled Clarke, Epping began to get themselves into the game.
Bickley also bowled Dean Waller for 11 and trapped Mike Sexton LBW for 12.
Spinner Dan Sibley bowled a tight spell as the drizzle began to fall and had Leigh skipper Nick Goodman caught in the deep by opposite number Geoff Maynard.
Bickley then made further inroads trapping John Braithwaite LBW for 15 and Sibley bowled Stu Elliott for 8.
Bickley was the star act for Epping with the ball, taking 4 for 54 while Sibley also performed well taking 2 for 48.
For Leigh the star man was Steve Burch who batted senisbly from number three to finish undefeated on 53.
Epping now travel to promotion certainties Hutton this Saturday knowing they need a win to ressurect their campaign.
