Epping Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Aztecs on Sun 05 Jun 2005 at 2.00
Epping Cricket Club Lost 38 Runs
Match report
Epping were well beaten by Essex Sunday League newcomers Aztecs on Sunday. Electing to bat first, the visitors were swiftly into the stride and were soon plundering runs with ease. They were assisted by the fact that Epping fielded with just 8 men for the first four overs and thereafter seemed incapable of bowling a consistent line and length. The home side did briefly get on top as wickets from Simon Oliver (3-53), Shahid Majeed (2-31) and the returning Dean Tredgett (2-26) reduced Aztecs to 127-6, but a couple of dropped catches in the deep gave big-hitting Ashwani a lifeline and he single-handedly punished the flagging home attack in the closing overs. Aided by a generous 31 extras, Aztecs closed on 215-9 from their 40 overs. Matthew Everett bowled a useful spell towards the end before a dislocated finger forced him out of the attack and the match.
The Epping response began steadily with Shahid Majeed and Dan Taylor forging a useful opening partnership. The home side found it much more difficult though to maintain the steady flow of boundaries that had bolstered the Aztecs run rate, and as the required rate increased so wickets began to fall. Taylor was dismissed for an attractive 31 and we soon slipped to 87-4. Ed Piller made 23 on his ESL seasonal debut but by the time he departed, and Majeed fell shortly afterwards for a patient 49, the lower-order were left with an impossible task. Simon Oliver and Billy Holden scored freely in the final few overs to lift us to 177-6 come the close, and in so doing secured an extra batting bonus point, but in truth our challenge had run out of steam long before.
Aztecs took the full 18 points and Epping 7
