Epping Cricket Club Lost 26 Runs
Match report
Epping lost their third Essex Sunday League fixture on the bounce yesterday, ending up second best in a high-scoring contest against Frenford at Redbridge Sports Centre. The home side won the toss and chose to bat first and their openers were quickly into their stride, making the most of a good wicket, a fast outfield and a shortish boundary on one side. Frenford were racing along at more than seven an over and only when Jon Everett (2-40) dislodged a couple of their big hitters did the run rate slow. At one point it seemed as if we might keep them below 200, with Shahid Majeed (2-39) and Simon Oliver (3-39) turning in useful spells, but a handy partnership between Ahmad and Sadiq helped lift our hosts to a competitive 238 from their 40 overs. At least when Dan Taylor bagged the last wicket in the final over, we made sure we collected the maximum 5 bowling points on offer.
Our run chase began promisingly with Dan Sly and guests Torqhir Hussain and Kazam Ali all scoring freely. Wickets began to tumble with alarming regularity though and when Ali was fourth out for an energetic 41 we had only 89 on the board. The rest of our middle-order came and went without too much fuss, aside from a brisk cameo from Pat Haslam, and at 116-7 we seemed doomed. A patient rebuilding job by Matt Everett (37) and Simon Oliver (43*) edged us towards respectability however and, at one point, with the runs coming easily again, an unlikely victory seemed on the cards. Jon Everett hung around doggedly to help Oliver add a further 46 for the last wicket, and secure 4 welcome batting points, but with 26 more still required from the final couple of overs, we ran out of steam.
Frenford took the full 18 points and Epping a well-deserved 9.
