Southend 221-9 drew with Epping 152-7

A DETERMINED Epping battled to a draw with promotion chasers Southend.
The visitors looked to be cruising to victory with brilliant bowling from Ben Wathen (3 for 20) and Zadi (2 for 34) reducing Epping to 20 for 5 chasing 222 to win.
With all hope of a win extinguished by the Southend wreckers Epping were forced to drop anchor and number 7 Shaba Masum settled in for a long stay.
Masum played sensibly to blunt everything Southend threw at him and lead his side to a draw with a fantastic 60 not out.
He got great support from Simon Oliver with a hard-fought 21 and Dave Bickley, 17 not out.
The majority of the game was dominated by the visitors who started quickly with their batting effort and should have posted 250.
Opener Rodgie wa positive in making before being trapped LBW by the miserly Dave Bickley (16-1-44-1) for 50.
Wathen also batted well until he was well caught at cover by Dan Majeed for 33.
Wayne Spear played the key knock with a battling 72, punishing some loose stuff offered up by the Epping spinners.
But from 185 for 3 Southend subsided rapidly after the introduction of seamer Masum and leg spinner Majeed.
Masum bowled a great line and length to pick up 4 for 34 and Majeed took 2 for 29.
