Essex League Div 3
Epping 177 drew with Ongar 154-8
EPPING'S faint promotion hopes hit the Ongar wall at Love Lane on Saturday.
The Ongar men have become Epping's real bogey side as they ended Epping's four-match winning streak which had given them a chance of reaching the top 2 spots.
But after beating leaders Stanford and challengers Old Southendians, in previous weeks the derby day spirit from Ongar denied Epping any further joy.
The visitors bowled a massive 57 overs back at Ongar who were set a modest 178 to win on an improving wicket.
Indeed Ongar were in the strongest position to win the game with skipper Steve Reynolds (39) and Aussie Matt Maguire (50) laying a sound platform in taking their side to 120 for 2.
But when both went the Ongar frailties were exposed and Epping's confidence came to the fore.
Dave Bickley ripped through the middle order and Ongar were soon reduced to 143 for 8.
Epping simply could not take the last two wickets they needed however to clinch a victory that would have gained them another 11 points, and put them just 11 points behind second placed Harold Wood who they face this Saturday at Lower Bury Lane.
That match has now lost its importance as Epping are now 22 points behind them and have little chance of overhauling that with 2 games to go.
There were some fine individual performances on both sides with Dan Twitchett registering 61 - his 3rd first team 50 in a row aged 15 - in very difficult early wet conditions.
Epping skipper Geoff Maynard registered 31 and Dan Majeed 33 as Epping battled hard in good conditions for bowling.
Ongar's bowling star was Dean Mitchell who bowled the perfect line and length on a difficult track, taking 6 for 53.
Bickley was once again Epping's bowling star taking 6 for 41.
Epping skipper Maynard said: "That's it for our chances of going up now I am afraid. But we only have ourselves to blame - if we had played anywhere near as we have done in the last 7 weeks in the first half of the season promotion would have been a certainty."
