Epping Cricket Club Lost 5 wickets
Match report
Essex League Div 3
Epping 176 lost to Southend 177-5 by 5 wickets
EPPING'S last game started in chaos and ended with an easy victory for Southend to give them promotion.
The visitors were forced to start the game batting with just 3 men after the majority of the side were delayed by over an hour by a car fire on the A127 outside Southend.
With Southend desperate to get started, the Epping 3 won the toss and could do nothing but bat first.
Out went makeshift openers Paul Offord and Shuhan Chowdhury - both more accustomed to the middle order - while number 3 and technical last man exchanged frantic phone calls with the travelling army, by now stuck in Benfleet.
The opening two held out for six overs until Chowdhury was bowled by Wathen for 10.
As Bickley strolled out, he did so in the knowledge that if he lost his wicket then the game was over.
Luckily for Epping and the game, the next wicket did not fall for another 2 overs during which time the Epping cavalry arrived.
Offord was then castled for 9 and after the world's swifest change into his gear and pads Epping skipper Geoff Maynard dashed out to the crease.
With the panic over but Epping on 25-2, he and Bickley set about restoring order and did so taking the shell-shocked visitors to 59 before Bickley was the third victim of Wathen for 23.
Young prodigy Dan Twitchett went first ball and it was left to Dan Sibley and Maynard to launch the Epping attack.
The pair put on 47 for the fifth wicket before Maynard snicked behind for 33.
Sibley continued the offensive but was eventually caught on the boundary for a marvellous 54.
Both batsmen can claim to be slightly unfortunate at the way they got out after both splitting their bats - Maynard in spectacular fashion with it breaking in two - and then having to wield unfamiliar blades.
Dave Sibley rallied the lower order with 26 but Epping knew that their final score of 176 all out was at least 30 runs short of a good score on a sound track.
Wathen had picked up 4 for 44 and spinner John Horne 5 for 34.
Southend were left with an age to knock off 177 to win and did so in relative comfort.
Dave Bickley picked up 2 more wickets to take him past 40 for the season but Southend's Chris Chambers provided a chanceless knock of 71 to see his side home by 5 wickets.
Southend achieved promotion to division 2 after Harold Wood failed to beat Old Brentwoods.
