Stanford-le-Hope v Epping Cricket Club Saturday Third XI on Sat 27 May 2006 at 1.30
Match was Abandoned
Match report
The Thirds went on a journey to Stanford-Le-Hope on Saturday with hopes of making up for their shocking display against Ongar the week before.
The journey to the match was through rain and never looked promising at all. We got to the ground and once again our captain, Ed Piller, lost an important toss. We were put in to bat on a very dam pitch and with clouds and rain looming all around.
Skipper Piller decided to keep his kangarooing batting order by sending out the third opening partnership in as many games, with Richard Crone being the fourth person to open the innings in 3 games!!! His partner was Jim Twitchett fresh from his heroic and defiant, but fruitless, half century the week before (although that was batting at number 3!!!). The pair set off well looking comfortable against the Stanford-Le-Hope bowling until the rain decided to fall and the match was stopped with only 5 overs being bowled. There was an attempt made to start again but that only last an over until the rain finally called a halt to any chance of a match being played. Having decided before the second attempt to play the match, Epping then had tea with a slim line Colin Offord scoring well in the sandwich stakes, he no longer eats cakes.
The match was finally called off with the heavens showing no sign of relenting…..until we got in our cars to go home, sods law I think it is called!!!!
The rain break did allow the Epping lads to have some time together in the changing room and work on their team bonding. Offord and Hyde renewed their loving relationship that had been missed over the winter months with enormous statements of affection!!! This time also allowed the Epping lads to show their utmost respect for their captain, Ed Piller, and to ridicule him for his lack of tossing expertises, come on Ed you have a 50% chance of winning!!!
Well next match is home to newly relegated Orsett where Epping will once again hope to kick start their winning ways.
