Cockfosters v Epping Cricket Club Sunday Gentlemen's XI on Sun 30 Apr 2006 at 2.00
Epping Cricket Club Won 47 runs
Match report
The Gents XI started off their season with a win over Cockfosters, that at tea looked very unlikely.
Having won the toss Epping decided to bat first opening up with the Holden brothers. The innings did not get off to a good start with the Cockfosters opening bowlers keeping a tight line and making it impossible for Epping to get the ball away. Their bowlers were rewarded with the wicket of Billy Holden with the score on only 4. It started an Epping collapse that was only stopped briefly when Ian Hancock joined Ed Holden at the crease. Both batsmen had to bat very defensively but some runs eventually started to flow. When Ian Hancock departed for a hard fought 10 the collapse continued. Ed Holden was the only batsman who got the measure of the Cockfosters bowlers with a defiant 45, just missing out on a deserved half century. There was a brief bright spell with Ned Piller and Max Tetlow, making his adult team debut, showing the men how to get the ball away. Their partnership was short but both batsmen showed good promise for the future, with Ned Piller carrying his bat to the end. With the Epping innings never really getting going and any runs that were scored coming at a snails pace, Epping ended with a very small and disappointing total of just 102 all out. The main Cockfosters bowlers who did the damage were Stead, 5-43, and Gregory, 2-6, but the Epping batsmen also contributed to their own demise. At tea the outlook for the Gents XI looked bleak, but there was a twist in the games tail.
After tea the Gents XI took the field, although with determination as always, they knew that victory was improbable. Epping opened the bowling with the two Bills, Holden and Beaumont. The pair bowled with great accuracy and skill with Billy Holden ripping through a couple of quick Cockfosters wickets with some sharp pace and some great movement. Bill Beaumont also got in on the act and suddenly the improbable looked more than likely. Cockfosters were 28-5 and 102 looked a very long way off. Epping knew that it only took a few lusty blows and their total would look a lot nearer. With that Dan Fowler was summoned to replace Billy Holden, who ended with amazing figures of 7-2-7-3. Fowler followed in Billy Holden’s footsteps with some tight bowling, picking up 3-9. With Bill Beaumont taking 2-17, victory was within Epping’s grasp. A bold bowling change came from the “Bionic Captain“, John Newman, who brought on the 15 year old debutant, Max Tetlow, to bowl some off-spin. With Fowler taking wickets at regular intervals and Tetlow keeping it tight the Cockfosters batsmen started to take some sharp runs. Another wicket came when they decided to take on the lethal arm of Ed Holden and Epping were gifted another vital wicket. With Cockfosters 8-50 Tetlow took his first adult wicket when he clean bowled Edwards for a resilient and dangerous 11. A well deserved wicket for Tetlow who finished with 1-16 from 3 impressive overs. Ned Piller, who replace Dan Fowler, needed only one delivery to finish off the Cockfosters resistance, bowling their captain for just 1. Cockfosters were all out for 55 and the Epping Sunday Gents XI had clutch victory from the jaws of defeat. Hopefully this will be the first of many victories in a successful season for the Gents.
