Epping Cricket Club Sunday Gentlemen's XI v Belmont and Edgware on Sun 07 May 2006 at 2.00

Match report
On a damp Sunday afternoon the Gents XI played host to Belmont and Edgware XI, in replace of the cancelled fixture. The pitch was very wet and the outfield muddy but with the sun coming out all efforts were made to get the pitch prepared.
Belmont were first to bat (sorry not sure who actually won the toss!!!) on the very damp, slow and unpredictable wicket. They got off to a slow start thanks to some very tight and probing bowling from Dan Twitchett, 7 overs for 18 runs, and Bill Beaumont, 2-53 off 13 overs. Beaumont was the first to strike with the wicket of S Davis with a beauty, which was acknowledge by the batsman on his return to the pavilion. E Davis kept the score ticking over with some sharply taken singles, sometime too sharp but the Gents fielders could not capitalise on their chances. Belmont never seemed too worried with their slow run rate which was a result of the damp pitch but also of some good Gents bowling. Tim Batchelor took over the bowling duties from Dan Twitchett and immediately found a very impressive line and length, and accompanied with the tennis ball like bounce had the Belmont batsmen in all sorts of trouble. With the run rate slow Belmont needed to push along but Lyons was comprehensively bowled trying to lift Batchelor in to Bury Lane for 7. Old stager Beaumont was eventually replaced, not a minute too soon he might add, by leg spinning Ned Piller. With the Belmont batsmen looking for some much needed runs Piller’s bowling was either going to suit the batsmen or was going to have them tied up in knots. After a shaky start Ned hit a length and showed what he can do when the ball comes out right. Unfortunately the batsmen where trying to get after the Gents bowling and Ned got some harsh treatment ending with figures of 4 overs for 36. With Sanger taking over from Ned the onslaught continued with Gutman hitting a quick fire 57 with Belmont & Edgware ending their innings on 191 for 5 with E Davis 74 not out, having kept the Belmont innings together. Batchelor finished with impressive figures of 3-58, having come in for some heavy treatment at the death.
After the Gents XI’s favourite part of the day, TEA!!!!! (and what a lovely tea it was Sandra, as always Epping keeping their teas to the highest of standards), the Gents sent out the Kwick Cricket experts Sanger and Offord for some sharp singles and some positive stroke play. Surprisingly neither actually came off and with some tidy bowling on what was still a difficult pitch the openers struggled to get the scoreboard ticking. Sanger eventually decided to take a quick single only to realise Offord was still eating tea at the non strikers end and was sent back to the pavilion run out!!! Hancock then joined Offord but neither batsman could break away and score runs. When Offord was caught for 9 in came Dan Twitchett. Having scored 49 earlier in the morning, bowled beautifully and then fielded like a demon Dan set about the task of keeping the innings together with some solid and correct cricket. He never looked in trouble but still even Dan found scoring hard. Hancock, Batchelor and Jim Twitchett all lost their wickets in quick succession leaving Dan Twitchett and Jack Simmonds to bat out the remaining overs, Dan Twitchett ending with an impressive and solid 24 and Jack Simmonds ending on a talented 6. Epping closed on a mere 83 for 5.
The Gents XI came away with a draw and they continue their unbeaten record and take it in to their fixture with Hockerill on Sunday.
