Epping Cricket Club Sunday Gentlemen's XI v Old Minchendenians on Sun 04 Jun 2006 at 2.00
Epping Cricket Club Lost 6 wickets

Match report The Gents hosted Old Minchedinians on Sunday on a beautiful summer’s afternoon which was perfect for a classic cricket match but as we could not get to Trent Bridge we decided to play our own!!!!!!!!

Having lost the toss Epping were asked to bat first and sent out the duo of John Sanger and Tim Batch. The OM’s bowlers, Patel and Jones were very tight and with the wicket playing very low and slow scoring was extremely hard but Sanger and Batchelor knew that a solid start was a must to build a platform for a big score. The pair put on 50 for the first wicket with Sanger riding his luck on numerous occasions. Batch was striking the odd full toss to the boundary, if only Tim was built a bit more he would have been able to hit the boundary and not make Sanger run so much as he was needing oxygen by the second over!!!! OM then turned to some slow bowlers but with the lack of pace off the pitch runs still were hard to come by. The OM bowlers got their reward with the wicket of Batchelor caught for 33. off Evans. John Brades then came to the wicket but his stay was cut short when he was given out LBW for 0. Ian Hancock then joined Sanger, who was still struggling to score freely. Sanger then was bowled by a ball that did not bounce as much as it should have and was dismissed for 27. Enter the run scoring maestro, James Twitchett, fresh from his 50 the previous day. With Epping now looking to push the score along Twitchett and Hancock tried to score more freely but it was made increasingly difficult as all the OM’s bowlers were accurate and probing. Some fine shots and good running allowed the gents a total of 134 with Twitchett dismissed at the end for 19 and Tetlow followed quickly as well leaving Hancock unbeaten on 31. Epping probably should have capitalised on a solid start made by the openers but credit must go to all the OM’s bowlers who bowled well with Evans (2-15) the pick of them.

Tea was then taken and what a spread it was, which was acknowledged by our opponents, so thank you very much Sandra. A note must be made that Mr Sanger was spoken to during tea by his skipper, Mr Newman, and banned from eating anymore at that session……..I must raise this with the committee as an Epping player being banned from eating seconds at tea!!!!! This is unheard of!!!!!!

Right back to the cricket!
Epping opened the bowling with old warhorse Bill Beaumont and Epping debutant Tom Davis. Davis fell in to an impeccable line and length and got just reward in his first over with the wicket of Bosdet caught well by Fleming. It was noted by the Epping lads that Fleming then proceeded to drop balls thrown to him in the field so Bosdet does not know how unlucky he was to be caught!!!! With not much happening and the Gents needing wickets Newman opted for a double bowling change of Batchelor and Fleming. Fleming immediately had Pandhal caught by Max Tetlow, who held on well moving forward low on the ground, and with Batchelor hitting his length and creating chances the Gents saw an opportunity to put some pressure on. Bryan took the initiative away from the Gents with some lusty blows against Fleming’s longhops and also took a liking to Sturm, who replaced Fleming, by peppering the midwicket boundary. Batchelor kept plugging away but could not even buy a wicket as nothing was going his way and when catches went to hand the Epping lads failed to hold on. Newman had a couple of very close stumpings turned down and that added to the dropped catches could have turned the match. Sanger replaced Sturm for a couple of overs at the end and managed to cause a few problems and dismissed Spring caught well by Sturm for 25. OM reached their total with relative ease thanks to Bryan who was unbeaten on 81. Although the Gents fought well they may well reflect on a slow scoring rate when batting and a few missed opportunities in the field and think that a better result should have come their way.
