Epping Cricket Club Under 11s v High Roding CC on Sun 10 Jun 2012 at 9:30am
Epping Cricket Club Lost

Match report Having got their league season off to a good start in the first game of the season the Epping Under-11's arrived in good spirits and with some welcome match practice in the bag their second fixture of the season was against High Roding CC, traditionally a strong outfit. On a wet pitch at Lower Bury Lane captain Harry Knight won the toss and elected to bat.

Harry and debutant Louis opened the batting for the home side and the pair batted very well against a well-drilled High Roding CC attack who didn't give away many easy runs and even fewer extras in the early overs which required the openers to maintain their discipline and bat steadily, which they did excellently with some excellent shots from both batsmen and some decisive running helping to eek out the extra runs when the rare chances came. The partnership was broken after a strong stand lasting 12 overs when Harry top-edged the ball to slip bringing Theo Harris to the crease. Theo and Louis continued in the same direction, batting solidly and giving no chances to the bowling attack who continued to apply huge amount of pressure on the batting side. When Louis and Theo fell lbw and caught respectively this brought two new batsmen to the crease, which in such difficult circumstances presened a difficult task with the advancing overs requiring the new batsmen to force the game which proved difficult resulting in a close run-out. However, the middle order were able to make some progress in the latter overs as the game opened up offering more scoring opportunities than in the early overs, carrying Epping to a respectable total of 61-6 after their 21 overs, indicative of the discipline shown by the Epping batsmen and testament to the stingy bowling from the visitors.

After the traditional squash and biscuits Epping took to the field looking to defend their total. The bowling was opened by Theo and debutant Jonny who made life difficult for the High Roding openers, although they proved to be just as disciplined as their Epping counterparts giving no clear cut chances in the early overs, remaining unbeated until Louis took a very smart caught and bowled to remove one opener on 22. By now the visitors were very close to the required total and edged towards the total with some aggression, which proved to be the undoing of their number 3 who blasted a cover drive off of Oscar's bowling looking to finish the chase with a flourish, only to be foiled by an outstanding catch by Theo who snaffled the ball with lightning reflexes. However, by then the visitors were within touching distance of a winning chase and calmly knocked off the final few runs to grasp victory.

While High Roding were worthy winners, Epping CC with a number of players making their debut and a few others playing against boys a couple of years older then themselves, gave an excellent account of themselves with some very mature batting and some excellent spells of bowling and showing a great amount of determination against an experienced team, a game that will no doubt prove to be valuable experience for the Epping young guns!
