Scorecard
Epping Cricket Club Saturday 2nd v Woodford Green on Sat 28 Jul 2007 at 1pm
Epping Cricket Club Won Epping won by 4 wickets
Match report
As usual Epping lost the toss and on a good batting track were sent out to field.
We had early success when one of Woodford Green's opening pair played on, but that was our only early success. Epping then chased leather as the ball was dispatched to all parts of the ground with apparent ease. As the total mounted we feared that we would be chasing a target in excess of 200 but their was some light at the end of the tunnel.
A change of bowling brought on Simon Moore and a cleverly flighted slower ball deceived the batsman and removed his middle stump with the score on 89 for 2.
This must have been a catalyst for Epping as Billy Holden was replaced by Monty Weerakoon and it wasn't long before he started to create havoc amongst the Woodford Green batsman.
With Simon Moore bowling some great line and length from one end and Monty Weerakoon turning the ball from the other the remaining eight Woodford Green wickets fell for 39 runs. With Moore returning 4 for 31 and Monty Weerakoon 5 for 30 Woodford Green's innings finished on 128 all out.
This collapse by Woodford Green did cause problems for our catering team on the day (Kevan Barrett) who as Mr. Unflappable ended up more like corporal Jones out of Dad's Army (don't panic, don't panic) but a superb tea was served on time.
Epping went out to bat after tea but were soon in trouble on 21 for 2 with both openers back in the pavillion. The ship was steadied by P. Offord and Weerakoon who moved the score along to 46 before Offord was caught.
Simon Moore came in next and he and Weerakoon batted sensibly and the score moved on to 103 before Moore was bowled for 33. Twitchett came in next but only managed to score 2 before Weerakoon hit the ball straight to point and called for a quick single but good fielding along with a good return to the keeper saw Twitchett run out by a couple of yards.
T. moore came in next and with Weerakoon looking for his fifty the target was slowly getting nearer. Our groundsman Steve ( don't darken my doorstep again) Hyde appeared and said that it was nearly time to get the song sheet out as the fat lady was about to sing. However rehersals didn't go quite to plan as Weerakoon skied one to mid off and was out for 45. Cotman was next man in and he and T. Moore finally got the fat lady her chance to sing as Cotman hit the winning run with 6 wickets down.
Well done lads.
