Epping Cricket Club Sunday Gentlemen's XI v Walthamstow on Sun 08 Jul 2007 at 2pm
Match was Drawn

Match report An honourable draw for the Gents at home to Walthamstow. An exciting game to the end that was played, for the most part, in good spirits, save for a slight altercation towards the end. This was well handled by one of the visiting umpires at the time and helped avoid the situation escalating.

Epping batted first and Dan Sly (32) was first to go having looked set to post a decent score against some reasonable bowling by Stow's openers. However, he fell to a ball that barely got 3" off the deck! Bad luck Dan (maybe you should use a shovel next time!)

There was good support in the form of Ian Hancock (37), Dan Taylor (19), Dan Twitchet, Charlie Barton & skipper john Newman who all posted scores of 12. No other batsman managed to reach double figures. Yours truly was not out 8 at the close.

The general concensus was that we were probably about 30 odd runs short, so we would need to bowl tightly and field well to have any chance of victory.

As usual, I opened the bowling and managed to return decent figures of 10-3-21-1, Dan Sly taking a very good catch at cover point for my wicket, removing their opener T. Taylor for 25 (their top scorer.)

R. Thompson (20), P. Everett (17), D. Tate (15) & G. Bonser (n.o. 11) were the only others to reach double figures, thanks to some excellent bowling - Dan Sly being the pick of the crop finishing with 9-3-25-3 and was bowling as quick as I've ever seen him bowl! Superb effort Dan. There were also good performances from George Thorpe (5-0-17-2) & the dependable Gary Barton (5-1-18-2).

Although they never managed to get away from us, their middle order were particularly stubborn and proved somewhat difficult to remove.

An inspired piece of captaincy saw Tom Davies (5-0-23-1) return to bowl the final over. He managed to get a wicket with his 2nd ball, leaving Walthamstow 9 down and a 10 year old lad coming in to bat. First ball popped up but was just a couple of yards out of reach of Dan Taylor. The youngster kept his head and saw out the rest of the over, with Stow finishing on 137 - 9.

So all in all, a very good draw - well done everyone.
