THE Saturday 1st XI league season opened with a run feast at Lower Bury Lane.
And in the end the home side felt they should have won a gripping contest after being well-placed to do so needing just under 100 runs to win with wickets in hand as the final 20 overs began.
Their chase to reach a massive 243 for victory in what turned out to be just 43 overs was on the cards after Jason Whiting smashed a brilliant 95 to set up the charge.
His innings was simply awesome at over a run a ball and including several mighty sixes.
He get good support from Geoff Maynard (19) and when both went the game was stil there to be won.
Dean Majeed continued the fight with a classy 51 but when he holed out the middle order fell away leaving tailenders Tim Adams and skipper Shahid Majeed to play our for a draw, 20 runs short of a win.
This was a game Epping would not have stood a chance of winning a year ago however and the fact that they were in the hunt this time augers well for the year.
Bowling wise Epping conceded 20 or 30 runs too many as Old Parks Oz star D Rootes (72) and skipper B Curtis (51) scored well to compile a masive 242-6 total.
