Epping Cricket Club Saturday 2nd v Orsett on Sat 07 Jun 2008 at 1pm
Epping Cricket Club Won EPPING WON BY TWO WICKETS
Match report
After a night of rain it was touch and go if the game went ahead, but after consultation with the ground curator and a large bribe he agreed that the wicket was just playable.
Winning the toss was going to be cruical and when it came up trumps for Epping it was obvious that Orsett were going to be asked to bat.
With openers Holden and Graham Preston bowling a tight line runs were hard to come by and Orsett struggled to make runs on a wet surface.Prestons spell of eight overs only went for 7 runs in which he claimed one wicket.
In the two spells that Holden bowled he was the pick of the bowling with figures of 19.1 overs 5 maidens 39 for 5.
He was ablely supported by messers Lycett, T. Preston, John Sanger and S. Oliver who kept the runs to a minimum throughout to such an extent that after 52 overs Orsett had just over 80 runs on the board and decided to bat on thus trying to deny us time to reach their total, this brought some moans from some of our younger players but you need to remember that this is league cricket and I would have done the same. We finally managed to bowl Orsett out for 101 runs which should have been a total we could easily reach.
However things were not as easy as it seems and when cool heads and concentration were needed Epping somewhat went to pieces.
After 13 overs we were 31 for 5 and staring defeat squarely in the face when Terry Preston and John Sanger came together and they made inroads into the target with Sanger playing the supporting role as Preston made a vital 29 runs before being caught and Sanger following one run later out LBW. We now required 28 runs from the final 8 overs, Twitchett and Holden pushed the score along to 93 before Twitchett was caught. Graham Preston came to the crease with Billy Holden on strike, Billy went for an all out assault on the bowling and with the aid of a no ball struck a magnicent six to win the game with one over to spare. So in the context of the game Orsett's score of 101 after 64.1 overs was very nearly a match winning score justifying their decision to bat on.
Well done Epping another win and 18 more points in the pot.
