Old Parkonians v Epping Cricket Club Saturday Third XI on Sat 10 May 2008 at 1pm
Epping Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Following on from a very tough season, the epping 3rd eleven approached the new fixture list with trepidation.
Away at Old Parks - the last result of any kind we’d obtained from our local rivals was a tie, and that was back in 2005.
The spectre of opening bowler Karuna loomed large. He’d ripped through a fragile defence three years running and colt Will Beavers was last heard wishing that he wasn’t on the pitch.
Parks won the toss and elected to bat. A sharp but wayward session from Arron Jaques was countered with the knowing variety of veteran Gary Barton. A couple of wickets fell, but Parks rattled along at a fine old rate until Adrian Beavers came on with his slow left armers. A wicket in the first over and some tight stuff from his son Will at the other end pegged a rampant Parkes back to a more pedestrian tempo.
A large target loomed however until Terry Moore came on for a super spell and Gary Barton’s second session finished them off. 181 was the target. Not impossible but on last year’s showing, unlikely.
Tony Sanderson and Arron Jaques got off to a flying start. Seventy odd before the first wicket went down as the impatient Jaques tried to pull a ball from their star spinner, the young Vijayanayathan, who finished with a four-for-not much. A few quick wickets fell until a quick cameo from Moore put the Epps in with a chance. We still needed a hundred or so and Tony Sanderson kept the scoreboard turning over until the young Beavers came to the crease. He had nothing to worry from Kartuna. The veteran was injured and only managed half a dozen overs. Will delivered a ruthless and mature innings, the like of which I haven’t seen at epping for a long time; shepherding the strike and eventually with his father saw Epping home; two wickets to spare with a ruthless lesson in footwork and aggressive stroke-play. He may have finished 2007 second in the league averages with the highest individual score but last season, he didn’t move his feet. Winter nets at Chelmsford and suddenly he does. 62 not out. Beware, Beavers is here. And he means business.
