Epping Cricket Club Saturday Third XI v Billericay on Sat 17 May 2008 at 1pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
A fairly constant drizzle awaited the team at their Coopersale base for the first home game of the season. Never strong enough to result in a cancellation, the conditions were thoroughly dismal. The forecast was for worse weather as the day went on, so captain Ed Piller, on winning the toss asked Billericay to bat; reasoning that we might be able to get them out cheaply and then they would suffer in ever deteriorating fielding conditions.
It almost worked too. An excellent start with a sopping ball saw Gary Barton again deliver an impressive spell. Ably backed by John Sanger, Terry Moore and Will Beavers (who at times was totally unplayable) the Epping bowlers ground them down. At eighty odd for six and a hundred for seven Epping looked to be favourites, but then, in ever increasing rain, two of Billericay's tailenders put on a magnificent 120 for the eigth wicket. The fielding conditions had taken their toll - steam was coming out of the mouth and fingers had seized up. plenty of catches went down along with our heads. We were sodden and freezing!
The opposition had posted a big score, but with a strong batting line up, Epping still fancied their chances. Afterall, the conditions were about to get worse, weren't they?
Well actually, they weren't. After tea the sun came out and the temperature rose. The ball dried considerably and feilding became much easier. The wicket held up well, and apart from the odd shooter played with the consistency of bounce we have come to expect. A good start from Tony Sanderson and Pete Farrar (who scored 51) left us with an acheiveable target after the first 15 or so overs, but it was not to be.
A mini-collapse of the middle order saw tailenders Adrian Beavers and Gary Barton clinging on for a well-earned draw. No hot showers after the game though because, as per usual, the pump was broken.
We're still unbeaten! Bring on next week!
