Epping Cricket Club Saturday Third XI v Belhus on Sat 15 Aug 2009 at 1pm
Epping Cricket Club Won By 137 runs
Match report
Having notched up their second win if the season against SOS (appropriately named) the week before, the 3's arrived in buoyant mood knowing that a win against Belhus would be a huge step in their fight for survival. Tony Fresh lost the toss and Belhus inserted Epping. With wily openers Fresh and Farrar at the crease (possibly the most experienced opening duo in recent memory) they proceeded to make a solid start, accumulating runs with some ease. At times almost seeming too comfortable, which in the end lead to rash shots accounting for both of the openeers.
However, the platform had been set for the middle order to make the going somewhat difficult for the Belhus bowlers on a good pitch and a lightning fast outfield. Most notably Andy Clapton (58) and Charlie 'Chaz and Dave' Barton (75) punishing every loose delivery that came their way, depositing several balls into the forest. Fetch. With Tony Fresh pondering when to declare, balancing the need to give us time to bowl them out, but not give them enough time to chase, Preston was sent to the crease with precise orders. However, some calamitous calling resulted in a less than comical run out for him, cue tantrum. With 45 overs on the board Tony felt it was time for tea and for the bowlers to take their turn in taking us to glory.
Fuelled with a great tea the Epping opening bowlers struggled to find rhythm early on with the Belhus openers scoring with some ease. However, within the space of a few overs some tidy bowling from Brad Sheridan and a corker from Tim Adams, Belhus found themselves sans openers. Preston then joined the party before becoming the life and soul of said party. Will 'no singles on me' Beavers piled the pressure on with a supberb run out to remove the last player that looked likely to trouble the scorers. GP then struck with 2 more quick wickets as Tony considered taking him off, at the end of every over Preston bought himself one more over every time, dismissing the Belhus batsmen with alarming regularity. The Belhus tail did provide some resistance, while Preston kept chipping away with regular wickets to keep Epping firmly in the driving seat. After Preston had claimed his 6th wicket, ably assisted in the process by tidy catches from Clapton and Farrar, Tony elected that a bowling change was required, bringing on Will Beavers to mop up the last wicket, only needing two deliveries to wrap up a convincing victory for the 3's. The great escape continues........
