Scorecard
Epping Cricket Club Sunday Gentlemen's XI v Cockfosters on Sun 26 Apr 2009 at 2pm
Epping Cricket Club Won By 1 wicket
Match report
The first Sunday Gents match of the season was played out in warm, sunny April conditions with Lower Bury Lane a perfect setting. Cockfosters won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat.
Epping’s opening bowlers Bill Beaumont and Aaron Jaques kept the scoring rate low, although a worrying trend for extras was established early on. The breakthrough came in the form of a run out by Matthew Barrett, throwing down the stumps leaving the Cockfosters opener well out of his ground. Change bowling combination the ‘Beavi’ (the plural form of Beavers) each took a wicket and maintained the early pressure, while Colin Offord picked up 2 good wickets. Some late order hitting from Wells (benefiting from some dropped catches and the umpire calling ‘Over’ as just as Barrett threw down the stumps with him well out of his ground) saw Cockfosters reach 189-6 off their 40 overs. 50 extras represented the biggest total on the scorecard.
Epping were confident that they could chase down the total, but Gill and Smith both departed without troubling the scorers. Beavers, Jaques (20), Simmonds and Charlie Barton all returned to the pavilion as Epping stuttered to 67-6. But Offord (33) and Barrett steadied the ship and then took the attack to the Cockfosters bowlers, as the game began to swing in Epping’s favour. Adrian Beavers, perhaps setting a record for the longest duck in Epping CC history, held up an end superbly as Barrett plundered the bowling attack to bring up his century as the target came down to single figures. However, with Epping requiring 2 to win, Beavers was bowled and Beaumont strode out to the wicket. The chaos of the next 3 balls saw two very confident LBW appeals turned down, but most importantly Beaumont survived. Barrett then hit the winning runs to finish on 111 not out as Epping squeaked home by 1 wicket in the penultimate over for a dramatic finish.
